We are two primary school teachers:

Carla Santos Acevedo: A Spanish- speaking tutor

Uxía Iglesias Gomez:  A teacher specialising in the English language. 


In this blog we will learn what disinformation is and certain key aspects for a good understanding of the term, the reasons for disinformation, how we can look for information from reliable sources; how to deal with it in the primary school classroom and different tips to fight against it and develop critical thinking.

This workshop against misinformation will be held in the San Vicente de Paúl School, in the town of Benavente; more specifically in the 6th year of primary school with approximately 24 pupils.





OBJECTIVES OF THE BLOG:
  1. Promote guidelines for the fight against misinformation in our educational institution.
  2. Promote digital literacy through education and training.
  3. Learning to differentiate digital content published on the Internet.
  4. Identify hoaxes and misinformation on the internet.
  5. Learn how to verify information with simple tools


PRIMARY SCHOOL CONTENT THAT WE WILL BE WORKING ON:

Digital competence: Focusing on digital literacy, this domain helps students acquire the skills necessary to navigate safely and critically in the digital environment, identify false information, verify sources, and distinguish between fact and opinion. Digital competence is key in the fight against misinformation.

CROSS-SECTIONAL AREAS:

  • Education in Values and Citizenship: This area promotes critical thinking, social responsibility and ethics in communication, which are essential to identify, analyse and combat misinformation. By working on these values, students can develop a reflective and responsible attitude towards the information they consume and share.
  • Gender Equality: This area focuses on promoting gender equality, and is key in the fight against misinformation, as fake news and stereotypes often perpetuate misconceptions about the roles of women and men. Working in this area allows students to detect and criticise content that reinforces discrimination or gender bias, promoting an attitude of respect and equality.

AS A FINAL CONCLUSION TO OUR BLOG WE WOULD LIKE TO SHARE A SHORT REFLECTION The ‘Our school against misinformation’ campaign has enabled students to use critical thinking skills to deal with the information they encounter in their daily lives, both in and out of school.   Throughout this blog, we have addressed fundamental aspects such as distinguishing between fact and opinion, verifying sources, and being wary of misleading content, allowing students to clearly recognise the pitfalls of misinformation. Through hands-on activities, such as case studies and the creation of a WebQuest, students have experienced first-hand how to spot misinformation and learned how to use fact-checking tools. Our efforts have not only supported digital literacy, but have also fostered an appreciation of responsible digital citizenship, enabling us to act in an ethical and informed manner online.  This blog is set up as an ongoing learning space, where our students can return to deepen the c...

En un entorno educativo que potencia la alfabetización digital, la escuela o el aula se convierte en un espacio donde los estudiantes desarrollan las competencias y habilidades que les permiten avanzar de forma crítica, segura y responsable en el ámbito digital.
