THINGS TO TAKE INTO ACCOUNT WHEN CARRYING OUT THE TASK

In our society we are offered access to a large amount of information, but we must also be aware and educate our students that we are also exposed to certain dangers such as media manipulation or disinformation, the spread of fake news and the lack of verification that the sources we are using are reliable. We are in an age where the spread of news is very fast and the influence of social media makes it difficult for people to distinguish and compare the authenticity of the information we are receiving.

  • Currently, there is a very relevant problem called information saturation, especially because we live in a society where access to and consumption of digital content is widespread and frequent. Nowadays, students grow up surrounded by screens and obtain most of their knowledge and education about the world through the Internet.
  • Having easy access to information can be beneficial, but there are also many times it is dangerous, as teenagers are not able to distinguish between what is manipulation and what is truth. Therefore, as teachers, our obligation is to promote critical thinking from a very early age. This is one of the great challenges we face as teachers in the information age. It is our responsibility to teach children not only to be able to search for truthful information, but also to do so in a critical way, i.e. not to believe everything that is put in front of them by different sources of information and to use effective search engines. It is also very important to make them aware of the existence of fakenews and hoaxes.
  • The aim is to enable students to become informed citizens, capable of making decisions based on concrete facts, avoiding being influenced by rumours or propaganda. The ability to analyse and evaluate information has a direct impact on a person's personal, social and academic life, as it influences the way they develop opinions, make decisions and understand current social and political issues. Digital education is no longer seen simply as an optional extra in curricula, but as an essential element.

In conclusion, it is essential that it is promoted as a key skill that cuts across disciplines, enabling students to practice critical thinking and the ability to analyse information both in their academic environment and in their daily routine. It is essential that curricula include in an organised way the teaching of online safety, digital ethics, and the ability to manage digital identity and digital footprint. These are fundamental competences that need to be addressed in education. Finally, the importance of teachers as leaders in this stage of online learning should be highlighted. It is not only about teaching the handling of technological tools, but also about guiding students in the critical analysis of the content they consume. Teachers should serve as role models in the search for truth, ethics in the handling of information, and the promotion of a safe and responsible digital environment.
